How To: Backup and Restore Sticky Notes in Windows

When re-formatting your computer or migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 8, or when you purchase a new computer, you may want to backup your Sticky Notes if you use them to keep them on the new computer. This guide will show you how to backup and restore the sticky notes. This guide was written with Windows 8, however the instructions work on Windows 7 as well.

Backup

1. Click on Start and type %appdata% and press Enter

2. Navigate to Microsoft\Sticky Notes\ (Full path would be %appdata%\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\)

3. Right Click on StickyNotes.snt and copy the file to a safe location (USB Flash Drive, Network Location, etc)

Restore

1. Click on Start and type %appdata% and press Enter

2. Navigate to Microsoft\Sticky Notes\ (Full path would be %appdata%\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\)

3. Locate your backup copy of StickyNotes.snt and replace the existing file.
 Note: You MUST have all of your sticky notes closed (or the sticky notes application) in order to replace the file

Sticky notes can be transferred between operating systems without issue. It’s good to keep a backup of this file if you rely on your sticky notes.
